Being Part of the Lung Squad: Management of Dysphagia in the Lung Transplant Population

AUDIENCE: Graduate students, Clinical Fellows, experienced clinicians, administrators and clinicians who would like to transition from school-based SLP to medical-based SLP.

Description of Webinar: This webinar will provide a comprehensive introduction to the lung transplant population. Learners will gain insight into indications for lung transplant, the lung transplant selection process, risk factors that place this population at increased risk of dysphagia, and evidence based principles of dysphagia management for lung transplant recipients. We will highlight the role of the SLP in the lung transplant team both during the post operative course as well as the role of prehabilitation for prospective lung transplant candidates.

Learning Objectives

1. Describe the incidence of post op dysphagia in this population and identify risk factors increasing their risk of dysphagia/aspiration.
2. Describe the role of the SLP within the lung transplant team.
3. Describe an evidence based post op pathway for dysphagia management in lung transplant patients

Presenter:

Jessell Posada has been a speech-language pathologist for 17 years with a focus in the acute care setting. She has mentored clinicians in the ICU , trach/vent, Modified Barium Swallow Studies (MBSS), and Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of the Swallow (FEES). In her current role as senior speech-language pathologist at New York Presbyterian- Columbia, she spearheaded the implementation of Expiratory Muscle Strength Training (EMST) as a treatment modality for patients with dysphagia. She also developed a prehabilitation program for prospective lung transplant candidates.

Gabriela Rodrigues has been practicing as a speech pathologist for 10 years, with the majority of her career spent at New York Presbyterian-Columbia. Her areas of interest and expertise include dysphagia in the critically ill, pulmonary and trach/vent populations as well as dysphagia in head in neck cancer and voice restoration after total laryngectomy. She previously led an initiative at Columbia to ensure that all lung transplant patients underwent an instrumental swallow assessment post operatively given the increased risk of dysphagia in this population.
