Nissan Skyline Overview

The legendary Nissan Skyline dates back to 1957. But did you know that it wasn’t always a Nissan to begin with? The Skyline moniker was originally the property of an automaker named Prince. Prince made the first Skylines as luxury cars. When Nissan acquired Prince in 1968, they retained the Skyline model and made it their own. The model is now in its thirteenth generation, with a loyal fanbase.

Although many associate the Skyline tag with a high-performance model, it has primarily been seen as a mid-sized luxury sedan and coupe in its home market of Japan. The first Skyline GTR appeared in 1968’s third generation and is popularly called the Hakosuka. This was the first halo variant of the Skyline. However, the hallowed “GTR” tag wouldn’t be seen on all generations thereafter. The R30 sixth generation had the RS as its performance variant. The R31 generation saw the new RB-generation engines debut, and the GTS-R came with a turbocharged variant.

1989’s R32 Nissan Skyline GTR is one of the best-known variants. It debuted four-wheel steering and the 2.6L RB26DETT twin-turbo V6 that is known as one of the most potent Japanese engines for tuners to work on. The R33 came out in 1993 and debuted an active limited-slip differential on GTR variants. A special Nismo 400R variant packed 400hp from a 2.8L RB28 twin-turbo engine.

The R34 is arguably the most well-known Skyline, thanks to its appearance in The Fast and the Furious. Nissan made a host of special editions, including the Spec I, Spec II, Spec II Nur, S-Tune, and R-Tune. The most potent was the Z-tune with 493 horsepower. Only 20 examples of this variant were made.

With the eleventh generation, Nissan took a different direction with the Skyline. It became a more luxurious offering that was also badged as an Infinity in some markets. That trend continues to this day. Meanwhile, the Nissan GTR has become a standalone two-door sports car.
